It is common to retain additional pounds after the baby arrives. There are several things to consider about weight loss as well as ways to help you shed unwanted weight.

If you step on the scale several days after you give birth, you will likely have one of two reactions. Disappointment or complete horror. The weight loss is either not as much as you had hoped, or in some cases, your weight might not have changed much.

Why didn't I lose more weight?

If you were one of the unlucky ones who did not lose much weight after birth, check your face, hands and ankles. Are they swollen? It might be that the pregnancy weight of the baby, placenta, amniotic fluid, etc.. was replaced by several pounds of fluid retention. This is common especially if you had a lot of IV fluids during your labor. The good news is that you should lose that fluid weight in about 2-3 weeks by urinating and perspiring more frequently.

What about all of the other unwanted weight after baby?

Here are some techniques to help you lose post-pregnancy weight.

  1. Drink at least 10-12 glasses of water every day. Replace your high sugar beverages such as sodas and juices with some water and a squeeze of fresh lemon. You could also try flavored seltzer water which has no calories. You can cut out hundreds of calories a day this way.
  2. Keep healthy snacks handy such as raisins, popcorn, wheat crackers, and nuts. Refuse to buy store-bought baked goods or junk food.
  3. Eat lean meats such as boneless chicken and the leanest cuts of beef.
  4. Eat whole grains (breads, cereals, pastas) instead of the "white" versions
  5. Don't be fooled by foods that are labeled as nonfat. Some are loaded with calories and can have hydrogenated vegetable oils and/or high fructose corn syrup, neither of which are healthy. Read your labels!
  6. Resist the urge to indulge in a fast food meal. Or if you do, order the salad and not the fat-filled burgers and fries.
  7. As soon as you feel ready, start light exercise. Weather-permitting, take a 10 minute walk with the baby every day and slowly increase your time to 20 minutes per day. Babies can be worn in a snugli or sling or you can use a baby jogger or stroller when they get too heavy. Even better, walk at a regular time with a friend.
  8. Find easy ways to increase your exercise like parking farther away or using stairs instead of elevators.
  9. Breastfeeding uses up your fat stores! Breastfeeding burns about 500 calories per day so the longer you breastfeed, the more calories you burn.
  10. Consider joining a gym and trade babysitting hours with a friend so when you each go to do your workout, the other can watch the babies. Some gyms may offer babysitting services as well.

Just remember it took 9 months to gain the weight; give yourself at least that long to take it off. I am not a fan of completely avoiding or drastically reducing food groups such as the popular diets of limiting carbs or sugars. I believe the more you deprive yourself of an occasional treat, the more you will crave it.

It is consistent exercise, making healthy food choices and changing your lifestyle (if that includes a poor diet) that is the answer to losing weight and keeping it off.

this is really good and encouraging. I just had my second baby 1 month ago. With my first it took awhile to get the weight off, about 7 months. I am looking at this again just 19 months later. Ugh, how I long to get into my regular clothes again. I will have to wait and try to do the same things I did before, eating right and exercising. I noticed that after I stopped nursing is when the weight came right off.?

I am eager to start working out.. I just had my baby 7 days ago however the C-section will limit me to a six week rest up period. I love the newborn baby though and this will be our special time to bond. After that it is to the gym in between feedings and housework. My life has definitly chaned it is more meaningful now.... the reason for the weight loss plan is I want to be able to live a long life so I
can enjoy my two kids.

Thank you,

I'm due any day with my second child and I've gained 26 lbs with her and with my first I gained 33 lbs. It took forever to loose the weight with my first and I didn't loose very much until after I stopped breast feeding then the weight just came right off. I still held onto 7 lbs up until this pregnancy. But with this one, I'm going to eat as healthy as possible, breast feed and start my exercise program slowly with walking, then build up to weights and running, and see how it goes. I hope to get down to my pre-pregnancy weight from my first child. Especially since this is my last child. I can't wait to see her.

It took me only 8 weeks to get the weight off with my first son and I gained 60 pounds with him. With my second child (girl) I gained 55 pounds and it took me at least 15 months to get it off with her. With my third I just had her the begining of july (2 mo. old girl) I gained 45, I have only lost 18 pounds. It's okay though I'm not going to stress out because that will just cause depression. I just started walking a mile at least 3 times a week about 3 weeks ago and we'll see how that goes so far it has helped me I can clear my mind while my husband watches the kids in the evening and help myself lose weight.
I'm not expecting any miracles

Thanks,

Kim

My baby is 3 weeks old now. Im not totally unhappy with my body, my tummy is back to where it was before the pregnancy, and i have pratically lost all the extra weight (18lbs down 8lbs to go). However celulite is all over my body now! I can see it in my tummy, arm and going down to my ankles. Its really disgusting. Im only 26 but my skin looks over 50 due to all this flab. How do I get rid of it? fast?

I had a baby boy 14 weeks ago, I put on 63 pound, when he was a day old I had lost 1 stone, however from that I have only lost a further stone... It is so depressing, it is my first baby and of course he was worth every pound of it, but I am struggling so much to loose the weight, I have cut my diet down considerably, and am exercising, but very little movement!!!

I have read your artcile while searching for explanation to the reason I did not lose the 12 kg I gained during my pregnancy.

Before having my child, I was able to loose up to 6 kg per month by dieting and exercising. However, after my pregnancy, nothing seems to work.

I exersised for 2 months one hour to two hours per day and I went into a low calorie diet, having only grills and vegetables but I lost only 1,5 after two months so I gave up. It is not worth all the struggle.

I just would like to know if there is any medical explanation why my body does not want to burn the fat I agined during preganancy.

It is frustrating to deprive myself and work out extra without good rsults.

Thanx

I had my baby 3 weeks ago. It is recommended to start working out 6 weeks after having a baby. So for now I am watching what I eat. I can not wait to start working out. I know it is going to be challenging due to the fact that my husband works all day and I am the only one that takes care of the baby. One quick question... what are good excercises I can do at home?? I would love some advise.

It is 5 weeks since I gave birth to Baby 2. I gained almost 40 lbs with her, lost 15 or so after delivery. With Baby 1, I gained 35 lbs and lost it all in about 3 months. I exercised and watched what I ate, and limited carbs in a healthy way. I am 143 now, and I want to be 120. That's a mountain of weight! I somehow feel lost or less motivated this time around. I don't know where to begin. I want to get on track. Thanks for you article. Reading about it is reminding me ofwhat I have to do, which is a step in the right direction.

I fear that my children are getting the bad eating habits that I show; I fear that I will become diabetic or other problems will begin. It is very hard to lose weight and take care of three small children. But I believe I will try these ten pointers nad I hope others will too.

Fat metabolism requires adequate intake of B group vitamins, so ensure you are getting plenty of those in your diet, or supplement with herbal remedies. Sometimes thyroid function can be impaired following pregnancy. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) slows metabolism and therefore makes it difficult to lose pregnancy weight. A simple blood test through your doctor can determine whether a thyroid is functioning adequately.

Hi all, my wife gained 30 kgs and now she is back to what she was earlier. The best exercise is to walk, use stairs and swim.

Avoid sugar, rice, fried stuff and eat lots of vegetables and fruits! trust me in no time you will see the difference.

Unfortunately, there is no scientic data to support that breast feeding helps your body to lose weight faster than not breastfeeding. I am a big advocate of breasting -- currently BF my third child. However, I do not believe in spreading unproven information. In fact, in many cases breastfeeding makes you retain the fat longer. Your fat cells are unwilling to give up the fat it believes it needs inorder to support BF. This does not mean that you can not lose weight. It just means that you need to understand this, accept it, eat healthy, and exercise. The weight will eventually come off BFing or not. Good luck.

I was 120 pounds before i get pregnant on my first child 5 years ago.I had a c-section and I gained 55lbs.I didn't loose any pound until shes 5 months. Then i watch the food i eat and my only work out was walking in the park while pushing her troley for an hour or 2 daily. But i didn't put so much attention on loosing weight because i enjoyed myself on being a new mom.Little by little i notice that i am dropping dress sizes and with in a year i went back to my 120 lbs weight.
Now iam 6 months pregnant to my second child. And at this time i gained weight faster than my first one. Now, all i care about is to eat the right food for my baby and me and i dont care wether how much weight i will gain again. So moms, dont worry about the pound!enjoy being pregnant and being mom

Skipping on soda and juices really helps. I usually reward myself with hard lemonade at the end of the week. Actually, the whole reward system works. After I lose a couple of pounds, I give myself a non-food treat like buying a new dress, or lipstick.

I'm reading this while eating my second cup of ice-cream... :P
My second baby has 2 weeks, with my first one it took me 3 months to lose all the weight I gained (35lbs) and as I had c-section couldn't do much the first 6 weeks. I plan on enjoying my baby the next weeks and then start exercising whenever I can, without stressing out.
For me, breastfeeding was the best diet!! I hope it helps this time too.

Losing weight after giving birth can be so difficult. Sounds to me like as each pregnancy is different, so is the story of losing the post-baby weight. I only gained about 25lbs with my first child, from what I re-call. I ate well for the most part during the pregnancy and worked out lightly in the first five months (I got too tired come month 6 to bother!) I am now 5 months pregnant with my second and the weight gain is coming alot easier:( Mind you I still had a couple extra pounds from the last one and have had a much larger appetite. I'm looking forward to dropping the weight again and will probably try some of the things that helped me lose last time.

For those interested in trying a new diet, I did the Sacred Heart Diet for a week (thats how long you are supposed to do it) and got great results (but I'm not going to lie it was tough at times). It's a great motivator to continue a healthy eating routine because you will see and feel results quickly.

The book "Skinny Bitch" is a good read also (SO FREAKING FUNNY); you may not adopt all the eating habits the authors do (they are vegan; I love cheese way too much to ditch it and the vegan cheese that I tried was nasty). Anyhow the book is really fun to read because of their tough'love approach. Whether you choose to adopt a vegan diet (which I myself did not) it's a great book with alot of helpful knowledge about food choices. I have not read Skinny Bitch: Bun in the Oven yet (yes, there is a whole series) but may pick that one up soon for good times.

WOW, well I have to agree with this info. My baby is now 4 months, and I lost 15lbs the first 2 weeks, and still have a little more than 20lbs to go. I just cannot seem to shake it. I exercise at least 3 times a week and eat something "green" 1-2 times a day. Anyway I have been told by so many people to be patient, and so I am learning to do that. Everyone be PATIENT, and don't beat yourself up.

I think breast feeding is one of the best for both the baby and the mom. I had gained exactly 25 lbs during pregnancy and I lost a lot of it literally during delivery! After that, I lost the remaining 12lbs or so just by breast feeding and eating healthy - no special work outs etc. I think though it's important to not rush to loose weight in an unhealthy way since our bodies have gone through almost a trauma during delivery. We do need to nurture it.

Nothing is encouraging to me anymore, I couldn't breastfeed my baby cause I had to many complications with it, but i gained 25 pounds with her and lost only 14 as of right now and she is almost 8 months old. No matter what I do, or how many times i go to the gym, or how healthy I eat nothing works. I'm stuck at my weight and I can't budge it. I have no clothes anymore besides sport shorts cause I dont even want to try to fit into pants anymore, and I have lost any happiness about myself. I can't lose this weight and I work out almost every night at the gym for an hour and I still eat under 1000 cals a day and they are healthy cals. I give up on weight loss and I read everyone else's comments and it only depresses me more to hear how everyone else can lose the weight by just sitting there feeding a baby and I gain by working out and trying to lose. People say, Oh well your gaining muscle and tone, yeah right My belly and legs are flabbier than they have ever been. It's gross and I'm starting not to even feel attractive:(

It took me 9 months to lose the weight with my first baby (I gained 28 lbs.) With my second the weight came off much faster (I gained 26 lbs. and it took about 2 months to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight). I did not breastfeed either baby. I found what helps is to limit sweets, don't eat out, and exercise while baby naps. If you want to exercise from home, buy DVDs with a variety of different exercise programs. I really like Denise Austin's workouts - she has pilates, yoga, and kickboxing. It also helps to have a toddler to chase around! :)

Some good tips but could have a lot more info. I had my son 7 months ago...I was 206 when I had my son and am now down to 170 and trying to loose 30 pounds to get back to what I should weigh...despite trying to eat better food, replacing meals with diet meal bars and exercising when possible it's not enough. It takes a lot of commitment to loose the weight and you have to give yourself time to get back to where you were at...the nine months comment is definately on target..I hope I can be back down to my former weight by summer. But to everyone, just don't give up it takes awhile but you will get there eventually if you give it effort!

im pregnant with my first baby. im 5'9 and weighed around 180 when i got pregnant. im in my 8th month and have gained 63 pounds. i am so afraid that im not going to be able to loose the weight after i have her. before i got pregnant, i didnt exercise, and diets never worked for me, so i didnt diet either. i pretty much stayed around the same weight all the time. but i feel so huge now, and on top of all the weight i gained and the baby, i definatly dont have a small bone structure. how can i lose the weight after i have her? is it safe to wear some type of body shaper until i do/can lose all the weight i gained?

I posted a question on yahoo answers about feeling bad about myself. I am 40 weeks pregnant. I gained 50lbs. I am glad too see other womens comments, the first person to answer my question on there told me to stop whining, and I was taking my pregnancy for granted. I am not. So I am glad to hear other womens issues without someone complaining against me.

My son is 3 1/2 months old. I am 5'9' and weighed 145 lbs when I got pregnant and I gained about 70 lbs! I weighed about 210 lbs when he was born. I am now down to about 158 or so and I am getting discouraged because the scale is hovering around 160. Am I being too hard on myself? I am afraid that I will never lose this weight and that there is something wrong!

My daughter is 3 months old and im still 160lbs.... And im breastfeeding with my first daughter it took almost a year to get to 120. I hope it happens sooner this time. 82lbs is alot of weight tho..

Loosing weight due to breastfeeding is a myth!!! It didn't work for me... As if my body was desperate to hold on to ALL spare energy to sustain my baby. Going down slowly after weaning my baby at 8 months...

Hello everybody! My name is Alex and i.m glad to make a post in this forum so maybe
i could help somebody whit my own experience.. I never was very very fat but eniway my condition was not ok because i madeit to 210 pounds at the age of 21 ... I had the same problems like all faty people had, but what i can not understand, why?!, if i stop eating or eat very less i don't lose weight at all ... After viziting doctors i discover Parasites in my stomach - everybody has them!, those one make you fat! because they excrete chemicals (waste products) that travel to your brain and tell your "hypothalamus" to make you store more and more fat for THEM to eat! and if they are left to live and breed inside your stomach, small and large intestines and colon, they will eventually cause you to gain lots.. lots of weight . I searchd alot of interesting materials via internet but the only one hwo helped me was Dr. Suzanne Gudakunst book.
The information you find in there is verry precious, efective tehnics for losing weight, in my case worked allmost perfectly. If you folks are interested and you realy want to become fit and stay for long chek this book:

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending! Only hopes of good ! and have a nice day!

I had my daughter 9 months ago. When she was born I was only 18 lbs over my original weight. 6 weeks later when the doctor told me I could work out again I had gained an additional 15 lbs and was devastated. Since then I've increased my protein intake and drastically cut modified sugars out of my diet.

I have a few workout DVD's at home and do alternating ones daily so a) I don't get bored and b) My body doesn't get too used to the movements, and I go to the gym 2-4 times a week for 1 hour of strengthening exercise and 20-30 min of cardio.

So far I've been on my new workout schedule for 3 months and have lost 2 inches around my chest and hips, and 6 inches around my waist. I don't know what my actualy weight loss is due to no scale at home but I think I've lost ~12 lbs so far. It's not as much as I wanted but it's a start.

It's nice to know that I'm not alone!!..my sister has just had a baby and she lost her belly straight away...but she was tiny in the first place!...I on the other hand was not and I'm really worried about trying to shift the weight!!..I really have no will power and get very depressed easily over my body..befor and now that I'm pregnant!!...I just really hope I can stick to it this time as my partner wants to go on hoilday about 6months after the baby is born as we have never been away...(because of my body hang ups)...fingers crossed then as I only have 8weeks till bubba comes!!..

When I got preg for my first daughter I went from 150 lbs up to 210 lbs... I was morfitied but it got worse when after 9 months I was only down to 185 lbs and I breastfed her for 5 months. Then I got pregnant for the second time and I was terrified to gain another 60 lbs. Thankfully I only went back up to 210 lbs. 6 months later I am down to 160 lbs. The weirdest part is I am too lazy/tired/busy to excersice and not disiplined enough to diet so I'm not sure how this weight is coming off.

I agree especially with point number 10. Exercise not only helps a new mom get back in shape but exercise while pregnant can make those long nine months more bearable and childbirth easier. For those with an iPhone I saw that there's even a app coming out specifically designed to guide women though the proper exercises to do both during their pregnancy and after. Here's the site for more info: mommacise.com

I had my little girl in July, she's almost two months old. The day I had her I was 193, now Im down to 168...I can see the changes in my body, and I don't like it....I have a jelly belly and I hate feeling so blahh about it, I've also noticed the weight in my arms and legs, and I have strech marks not only on my belly but legs. The thing that's motivated me about losing weight is my mom took me to get some clothes that fit...I got a size 13, I was a 8 before my pregnacy....the size 13 pants were to small...it really hit hard, I want to lose my baby weight so bad! Im going to use this steps and hope for the best!!!!
Thank you,
Ashley

Great advice, Nicola! Thanks for sharing it! Even though I was sort of in denial/oblivion with respect to the whole postpartum, must-get-my-old-body-back thing, I found that I didn’t gain *more*, because being home with my kids for awhile kept me pretty active! (My career was quite sedentary in comparison.) Keeping junk food of the house does help; if we wanted to get cookies, we’d make it an outing and get *a* good quality cookie at the bakery, rather than a whole package of ho-hum cookies at the grocery store, and usually followed it up with a park visit or a nice walk around town.
